Action!
Tarentum RPC's (Pennsylvania) member, Tom Erdner relayed a story about a call he had recently. Many thanks to Tom for sharing his hobby, and sharing this story with us.

'In late June I got a call from the owner of Animal Actors, Inc. in New York asking if I knew anyone who could provide pigeons for release in a movie they would be filming after July 4 in Pittsburgh. He found me through our club website. I told him I could as we had just finished up our OB season and I had birds in plenty good enough shape to make a local flight. He said "Great!" and added that he was relieved to find me as he had some pigeons at his property in NJ but wasn't confident they could make the flight from Pittsburgh. He went on to say that over the years he's kept all kinds of animals in several barns there. He even had an elephant at one time!

He called me in a bit of a panic the next day and said that the film schedule had been moved up and they were going to shoot the scene two days later at the Leetsdale Boat Dock in Leetsdale, PA, which is about 20 air miles from my loft. I met them there with the birds. As he walks out on the dock, he sees an old man who had been fishing there release a pigeon. He asks the old man if that was a homing pigeon. The old man says "Yes' and goes on to explain that he communicates with his son in Detroit via pigeon. He says the bird was carrying a note. (They had previously filmed the old man putting a note in the message container and then tying the container on the bird's leg). Renner wryly says, "I use a telephone." The old man makes a few nonsensical remarks (to a pigeon flyer) such as "I've missed a lot of phone calls, but I ain't never missed a pigeon" and "A pigeon can fly from Pittsburgh to Detroit and back in about four hours." They chat a bit longer and the thugs arrive. Renner wishes the old man well and walks off the dock to his meeting.

The shoot reminded of my long-ago life in the military -- "Hurry up and wait." He admitted he was "afraid them birds would bite me." I showed him repeatedly how to reach into the crate and catch the bird, and how to hold it with one hand, but he was too distracted about remembering his lines and not "getting bit" that he didn't pay attention to what I was telling him. So later, I had to sit and grind my teeth as he pulled my magnificent birds one by one out of the crate by their wings or their necks in each take.

I was surprised that the pigeon release had nothing to do with the movie's plot, unlike the scene in John Wick where Laurence Fishburne communicates with his Bowery crew by pigeon to avoid telephone bugs and Internet IP address tracking. They couldn't believe that my birds would actually fly the 20 miles back to my loft. Most thought the birds would just go out, fly a couple of loops over the river, then come back to the crate. When I told them that we regularly race them up to 600 miles, they were amazed and slack jawed. "No way!"

"Yeah! great bird there’s a good chance you’re eligible for Medicare. I may have remembered
it during that time, but I sure do remember it in the late 1990’s.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"> I had flown home for a visit with my
folks and my Dad was all excited because he had recently acquired a bird that
was supposedly a descendant of the Vintage Cock 2204. He had pictures and
articles about this famous bird. Not only was this bird an award winning
accomplished long-distance racer…. It was Pure Trenton!!!! To my Dad, this bird
was a Super-Star and a bird most could only dream about.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"> This Bird was flown continuously starting as a
youngster and flew his first 500 as a yearling. He never missed a 500 or
600-mile race with the Washington Metropolitan Concourse and was flown up to the
age of nine. He had many 1st 2nd and 3rd place wins and flew 14 times the 500
and 8 times the 600. He was recognized by the AU and received the Registered
Champion Award. In his racing career he had compiled over 13,000 miles in recorded
competitive racing.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"> This past November I had the honor
of attending the AU 2021 Convention in Tampa Fl. Besides all the awesome things
the AU has to offer at these Conventions I was there to pick up the AU Breeder
Elite Award for my Dad, Ed Oshaben for his many decades of dedication to his Trenton’s.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"> During the lunch break on the
Saturday of the banquet I spotted a table with two Gentlemen, both of whom were
my seniors and I asked if they would mind if I sat with them. After a while one
of the Gentleman said: Oh, you’re the Trenton Guy! Immediately the other
Gentlemen started telling me how much he loved Trenton’s. He said his very
first birds were Trenton’s, and he flew them for many years. Then he asked if I
ever heard of the Vintage Cock? I excitedly replied: Yes, of course I have. He
then told me he was the owner/breeder and handler of that very famous bird. My
excitement was Sky High just to be sitting with this Guy!!! What happened next
is the best part. He told me the Father of 2204 was from Art Nemechek and the
Mothers bloodline was from that Oshbern (Oshaben) guy in Ohio. I about fell out
of my chair, if my Dad would have only known… this most Famous Pigeon that my
Dad so looked up to was of some of his bloodline. The Gentlemen I was talking
with is John Celia, he lives in Silver Springs MD and is still a very active
and accomplished flyer. After I told John who I was he was also excited as
well. I pretty much latched onto his shirt tail and even later we sat together
at the banquet. John, like many of that great generation, still reveres the
old-bird long distance races.

to let you know the AU has a race clocking procedure ideal for youth and youth
groups that does not require the purchase of any type of clock. This new system takes us back in time to the
use of the countermark machine and physically removing the countermark off the
leg of our feathered athlete when it returns from the release point.

The cost of
clocks has prohibited many children or youth groups from participating in our
sport. This new system helps eliminate
that cost. This system is ideal for
youth groups, such as 4-H, schools, or home school groups.

Regrettably
many pigeon flyers today have never experienced the thrill of removing a
countermark from the pigeon’s leg and with trembling fingers placing the small
countermark in a capsule to drop in the clock.
The clank noise of the old clocks being hand turned has been replaced by
the multiple beeping of birds rushing across the pad and being clocked
automatically. Now, a pigeon owner can
be on the lake fishing and get a text or email that his or her bird has safely
made it home from miles away. With
today’s technology no one has to be there to witness this remarkable feat of
possibly flying hundreds of miles overcoming many obstacles.

As a former
teacher that has had lofts at many different schools, I know the importance of
the interaction of children and our remarkable birds. This clocking system ensures this interaction
because the junior member must remove the countermark and by using an
electronic device enter the countermark number on the AU National Database. The bird will then immediately be clocked
in the race.

<span face=""arial" , sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">A special event is taking
place tomorrow in Washington D.C. Robin
Hutton, who has written two books on amazing war animals, has organized and
orchestrated a presentation ceremony to recognize GI Joe and Cher Ami for their
wartime service. After Robin finished
her first book (<span face=""arial" , "sans-serif"" style="color: #26282a; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Sgt Reckless: America's War Horse<span face=""arial" , sans-serif" style="color: #26282a; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> (NY Times bestseller),
she nominated and received the Dickin Medal for Sgt. Reckless in 2016. At that time, she wondered why America did
not have a medal such as the Dickin.

<span face=""arial" , "sans-serif"" style="color: #26282a; font-size: 12pt;">While doing research,
Robin discovered GI Joe and all of the amazing animals that received the
prestigious Dickin Medal during World War II.
She followed with a second book, War Animals: The Unsung Heroes
of World War II. Robin began a campaign to honor the animals in
America.

attendance.<span face=""arial" , "sans-serif"" style="color: #26282a; font-size: 12pt;">

<span face=""arial" , sans-serif" style="font-size: 12pt;">To honor these heroes in
a larger and more permanent way, this medal ceremony will also launch a
new International War Animals Museum, hopefully to be placed in
Washington, DC. The medals will be
displayed in a special exhibit there. (However, Cher Ami's medal will go to the
Smithsonian, and GI Joe's will go to the new Army Museum in Ft Belvoir.) Until the
International War Animals Museum has a final place, the organization will also
be providing traveling exhibits to other museums around the country that want
to feature these incredible heroes. This museum will be a wonderful place for
people, especially children, to come and learn history through the eyes of the
animals for generations to come.

We all hate to have disagreements occur in our clubs
that often end in ill-feelings, lost friendships and many times can even cause
a flyer to leave our sport. Member dissatisfaction from these conflicts is one
of the top reasons that a member quits our sport. Far too often it causes a set back in our
clubs. We have to constantly remind
ourselves that the reason we got into this Sport in the first place was to

I
am often surprised by the seemingly lack of operating procedures, common sense
and “protocol” that many clubs seem to try and operate with. Most of the conflicts and problems a club has
arise simply because of poor communications and a full understanding of how the

One
thing that stands out with the stronger clubs is that the members all have a
clear understanding of their purpose as a club and how they have agreed to
treat their members and themselves. This
is more than just camaraderie and friendship.
It’s the understanding by all the members that the club operates with

Your
club’s Constitution and Bylaws is after all, the guidelines, policies and rules
that your club has agreed to use and live by.
It is the agreement the club has made with it’s members that defines how
it will be organized, and what responsibilities the clubs elected officers

the club will deal with problems or disputes when they arise.

Here
is a brief outline of some of the main elements that your club’s Constitution
and Bylaws should encompass.

describes the objective and purpose of why the club exists. This can be a simple sentence or two which
will help “set the stage” and can be used to re-focus the club on its true
objective, such as: “The Purpose of this

member should have full entitlement to participate in races and other
activities sponsored by the club, but may not have voting privileges during
this period. Usually at the first club
meeting following completion of this probationary period, the member would be
voted into full active member status.

One
of the most important areas of your club’s Constitution and Bylaws is that of

duties and responsibilities are.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Larry Davis shared another handy tip for beginners. It is something that is easy to do, and so practical for any bird that may have stopped on its journey back home. It is the wing stamp. It's nothing particularly fancy, but it is powerful in directing anyone to the proper owner contact information.

Approximately 15 years ago my daughter approached me with an
idea too intriguing to pass up. It involved
her class of 3rd Graders at Crestwood Elementary School in Elyria, Ohio and their
instruction in the differences between a question, a statement and an exclamation,
the use of technology to communicate, math and Homing Pigeons. Come on now, you know you saw that one coming
didn’t you?

Without trying to brag too much about her ingenious idea let
me try to throw in some details for clarification. Our family (on her mother’s side) has been active
in pigeon flying for at least 5 generations, mostly in the Greater Cleveland area
with one emigrant to the Chattanooga Club.
So she is very familiar with the sport and the birds even though she never
had any particular interest in competing with the birds. But she is as smart as a whip (yeah, it comes
from her Mother) and is one of those teachers we all hope our kids have in their
lives.

Her idea was to incorporate a little history of homing pigeons
into her lesson plan about what exactly a question consists of, then have each student
write down a question regarding pigeons, pick 5 of those questions, have her Dad
bring some of his team to her school for a little hands on experience for the kids
along with a little spiel from the old man, let each interested student actually
touch a bird (this has always been a magic moment for me because of the look on
their faces), place those 5 questions in a WW II type message carrier, strap it
to the bird and then try our best to synchronize the release.

It takes a few minutes for the kids to get the knack of how to
safely hold the birds but they are very good about just letting the bird go if it
gets too squirmy for them to hold onto. In
all these years they have never once hurt a bird or damaged the feathers. And for 99% of these young folks the only pigeons
they know are the ones in barns and on wires.
When I ask them what their first impression is after touching the birds it
is almost always, “They are soooo soft.”
Hence, that magic moment.

After the birds are out of sight I remind them of the time and
the distance in miles to my loft. I point
out they need to remember these facts because after I answer their 5 questions now
on the way to my loft, there will be a question from me for them to answer.

I answer their questions via email as part of the curriculum
involving the use of technology. My question
to them is sent the same way. I tell them
the arrival time of the first bird and ask them to calculate the speed in MPH. If they were 4th graders, I would probably go
for the YPM calculation, but it’s a beginning.

And there you have the simplistic explanation for a complicated
process. My hope is some of our membership
will see this as an opportunity to promote our sport. But more importantly, expose
our hobby to the next generation and along the way help educate them in a very novel
way. If you do nothing else, I promise you
will bring lots of smiles to lots of kids’ faces.

My daughter will gladly share her lesson plan with any certified
educator. That’s another reason why her Mom
and Dad are so proud of her and the work she does.

This year ended up a two day affair due to rain moving in unexpectedly
on day one. As you can clearly see from these

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The leadership of the club may guide members to steer away from potential problems. The structure of the club will dictate how efficiently the club runs. The basic fundamentals of a club include election of leaders, the conduct of those leaders, and running the club smoothly. There will always be times when a decision will be made that may not please all members. However, there should be ways to mediate and to make change when appropriate.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">For instance, if the majority of a club votes in favor of changing the time frame that members should arrive for basketing and there are one or two members that can’t meet that time, a compromise can be made. One club member that is able to attend basketing by the appropriate time might bring the birds for another member that can’t.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">At the next annual meeting when a change may be voted on, bring up the issue, discuss it rationally and ask for a vote. In other words, you may not like a decision or vote, however, if the majority are in favor, it must be upheld. There will be an appropriate time to revisit the issue. Members should understand the majority rules and that there is always an opportunity to reconsider – at the appropriate time. Club officers are the leaders of the club and should set this example.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Your AU Board of Directors adhere to this. The AU utilizes the Board Action Request (BAR). This is a simple form members may use to submit a request to change a policy, race rule, by-law, or introduce a new program. The Board reviews BAR’s at each Board Meeting. If the BAR introduces something that will benefit the majority, the Board may vote to approve. There may be a Board Member that does not agree, however, the majority vote rules. That Board Member will uphold the new approved policy or race rule presented in the approved BAR, because the majority voted to approve. However, that Board Member has a right to resubmit for discussion at the next meeting.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It may be a good idea for your club to adopt a similar process. The bottom line - utilize the appropriate opportunities to request change. Don’t allow bickering once something is passed. You can’t please all of the people all of the time.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The leaders of the club should be the first to set the example.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In order for any club to operate, there should be an atmosphere that is inviting. If club members are unhappy or uncertain of their responsibilities, relationships may be strained and members may leave.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A lot of clubs currently have a set of By-laws in place. Have you seen your club’s Bylaws? How long has it been since they were reviewed and updated? Do all members in your club have a copy to reference?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">All clubs should have a Constitution and Bylaws with which to govern the club. The Bylaws may be very basic and need not be complicated. Having members work together to create by-laws means everyone has ownership. The Bylaws will serve as a tool in the event of a dispute.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Bylaws should clearly define the offices for election, terms of office, special meetings and how to handle complaints.
Jim Gabler shared that America's Dream Loft has a history of supporting the sport in many ways and their plan for the fall is an Auction of the Legions. Jim said, "That auction will bring top donated birds and hopefully we can get only birds that are winners or who have bred winners. It will be an internet auction followed by a live auction. ADL will organize and do all the promotion and work with the income from the sale going to the kids."
The Northwest Juniors RPC was selected as the recipient based upon the founder's 16 years of experience doing the right things for kids.

They are looking forward to this happening in the fall, so keep an eye out for an opportunity to take part in a project that benefits the future of the hobby of racing homing pigeons.
The only people invited to the race day event were the donors and any press Charlie pre-screened. They did a series of 4 releases in order to include demonstration of orientation, exercise and conditioning and then the race. . . It was such a unique activity that the organization wants Charlie to repeat it next year.
