Shiromas Wow Hawaiian Students!

Julian Shiroma is the President of the Kona Racing Pigeon Club in Hawaii.  He has been a big time promoter for the AU and the racing homing pigeon sport for many years.

He recently shared one example of his promotion activities at a charter school in his area.

"With the help and assistance of my wife, Naomi, we made a pigeon presentation to the kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders of the Innovations Public Charter School studying the 'flight of birds' in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.   The children were so excited it was palpable.  They had so many questions.  We gave them the history of the pigeons to include how they transported messages in the war. We also told them about how we race homing pigeons and also how we use the pure white ones for weddings, funerals, and other special occasions.  We also gave each student, (about 75 total), an opportunity to pet the birds.  We then handed out strips of paper for selected students to write messages to me.  We attached the messages to the pigeon's legs and had the students hold and release the messenger birds.  At the end we had the students open three crates for a flock release.

The following day, I returned to the school to deliver the messages I received from the students with my short written responses."

Julian & Naomi have received a bunch of thank you cards from the kids.

We salute Julian and Naomi!
